BRC IOP

Accreditation standard for companies producing packaging that comes into contact with food products. Has many aspects of ISO 9000 but with additions relating purely to potential contamination of food products.

CDM

Defines aspects of the design and construction of properties, including provision of H&S outlined facilities

COSHH

Defines measures to control exposure to hazardous substances, preventing ill health. Employees have to protect both employees and others who may be exposed by complying with the regulations.

DDA Assessment

Ensures that a disabled person is not at a substantial disadvantage in comparison with persons who are not disabled. This relates to fire precautions, access and egress, etc.

DSEAR

Used to determine the risk of the potential generation of an explosive fuel air mix. From the risk levels determined, it defines appropriate Electrical safety requirements on equipment used in the risk area. It will also designate risk zones and appropriate signage.

HSE

The government agency responsible for health and safety

IOSH

Institute for Health and Safety practitioners.

The institute for Health and Safety practitioners, like all such institutes it provides a formalised training and acceptance scheme for its members, and has levels of services etc. built into its guidelines.

IPPC

Controls for the prevention of pollution and System for the management of a companies waste an immersions plus emergency procedures for the control of accidental releases in the atmosphere or environment.

ISO 14000

Standard outlining requirements for prevention of environmental contamination

ISO 17025

Defines accreditation criteria to be met by testing laboratories. Goes far beyond ISO 9000, covering methodology, training and other areas specific to the testing laboratory environment.

ISO 9000

The basic standard for the minimum requirements for a Quality Assurance system for a company. One aspect of which is the compliance with the Health and Safety At Work act and the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 

MAC

A sheet designed by the HSE for analysis of manual handling operations. Uses a scoring system based on weights, environment, etc. to define the risk factor for every operation. This allows a consistency in reporting of manual handling exercises.

MIOSH

NEBOSH

NEBOSH is an independent agency whose qualifications are recognised and respected by employers in all sectors of the economy and provide the benchmark standard against which others are compared. A NEBOSH certificate is often taken as the minimum qualification requirement for an H&S professional.

OHSAS 18001

An accreditation standard for Health and Safety systems, this is not a national or international standard but is the accepted standard for this area.

PPE

Safety Glasses, Hearing Protections, Safety Shoes, Gloves, etc. any protective equipment worn by an operative rather than attached to the equipment being used.

RIDDOR

A formal method or reporting Health and Safety related incidents and disease, this has set guidelines for reporting and failing to meet these can result in substantial claims and action by the HSE

SDS or MSDS

The Data sheets that all suppliers of chemicals etc. must provide to you. It outlines the risks from using the products. The information on these sheets is covered by the CHIP regulations.
